Burnside Church has its roots in 1928. The congregation first met in temporary spaces. World War II delayed construction of a permanent building. But something remarkable happened after the war.
Two congregations in Pollokshields, Glasgow, merged. They chose Sherbrooke Church as their main site. This left St Gilbert’s Church unoccupied. Instead of abandoning St Gilbert’s, they decided to move it. Brick by brick, workers dismantled St Gilbert’s Church. They transported the materials to Burnside. Imagine the effort. The relocation was completed in 1954.
Burnside Church is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a Category B listed building. It features stained glass windows by Oscar Paterson. His artistry adds to the church’s beauty. These windows tell stories through light and color.
In 2002, the sanctuary underwent a complete refurbishment. This coincided with another merger. Burnside joined with Blairbeth Parish Church. The Blairbeth site on Drumliaw Road remains in use. It serves as a secondary site for services and clubs.
Rev. David Easton served as minister for 28 years. He retired in 2005. William Wilson was inducted in September 2006. Today, Burnside Church offers various programs. There are Sunday services and clubs for children. “The Way” is a club for secondary school students. The Blairbeth building hosts Storykeepers and Megaquest clubs.
Burnside Blairbeth Church takes safeguarding seriously. They prioritize the safety of children and vulnerable adults. They have strict procedures. These ensure a safe environment for everyone.
