Nestled in southwest Houston, Burnett-Bayland Park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Established in 1996, this park is much more than just a green space though. Burnett-Bayland Park is a shining example of a community coming together to create something truly special for their neighborhood. In fact, this is the very story the park tells to everyone who visits.
The Gulfton neighborhood, where the park sits, was once just a quiet, humble area. However, as the city of Houston grew, so did Gulfton, evolving into a diverse hub, home to a variety of cultures. The park itself was built in 1996, offering the locals a space to relax and enjoy life. It boasted a water playground, a children’s playground, a walking trail, and a community garden.
However, the park was missing something important. It was missing a space for the neighborhood’s youth to express themselves through skateboarding.
So, the youth of Gulfton took it upon themselves to make their dream a reality. They spent years collaborating with local community centers, city officials, and the Houston Parks Board, finally opening the Gulfton Skatepark at Burnett-Bayland Park in 2016.
The skate park, affectionately known as “The Station,” covers over seventeen thousand square feet of park course. There are areas for skaters of all skill levels, from the seasoned pros to beginners taking their first push on the board. The major part of the skate park is the street course, which features quarter pipes, stair sets, ledges, and handrails. But for those looking to skate transition, there is also an enclosed bowl.
Today, Burnett-Bayland Park serves as a symbol of community spirit and dedication. It’s a place that showcases the power of collaboration and the dream of a group of young people coming to life.
