Ever wondered about the silent sentinel guarding Burholme Park? That’s the Burholme Water Tower. It’s more than just a water tower. It’s a piece of Philadelphia’s history. The Burholme Water Tower stands proudly. It’s a testament to a time when grand estates graced this area. It’s a reminder of the Ryerss family. They built Burholme. This magnificent estate included the water tower. Joseph Waln Ryerss a descendant of original Pennsylvania settlers built Burholme in 1859. He was a successful businessman involved in trade with distant lands like China and Japan. He filled Burholme with exotic treasures from his travels. The name Burholme itself means “home in a wooded setting”. A fitting description for its peaceful location. After Joseph’s death his son Robert inherited Burholme. Robert expanded the estate making it a year round residence. He too was a collector adding to the treasures within. Robert’s love for Burholme led him to leave it to the city of Philadelphia. His will specified that it should become a park a library and a museum free to the people forever. He also ensured funds for maintenance and new books. His housekeeper and later wife Mary Ann Ryerss Bawn oversaw the transition. She and her second husband continued the family’s tradition of global travel adding to the collection. The Burholme Water Tower remained. It served as a silent witness to the changing landscape of the area. It’s a landmark today. A tangible link to Burholme’s fascinating past. It stands tall. It’s a symbol of a family’s legacy and a community’s enduring spirit. The Burholme Water Tower continues to watch over Burholme Park. A silent guardian of history.
