Hidden on a hillside overlooking the Oberkassel district of Büchel, lies the Burgwüstung Steiner Häuschen. This ruined medieval castle whispers tales of a time long past. The Burgwüstung Steiner Häuschen dates back to the 10th century. It witnessed the rise and fall of empires, and the changing tides of history. Originally, the Counts of Molbach held ownership of the Burgwüstung Steiner Häuschen in the late 12th century. Countess Alveradis of Molbach generously gifted the “Haistilberg” estate, which included Burgwüstung Steiner Häuschen, to the Cistercian abbey of Heisterbach before 1210. Tragedy struck around 1217. A lightning bolt, a force of nature, shattered the tower of Burgwüstung Steiner Häuschen. Caesarius of Heisterbach recorded this event. The tower was never rebuilt, leaving the Burgwüstung Steiner Häuschen forever changed. Centuries passed, and the ruins lay silent beneath the earth. Then, during the construction of the A 59 motorway in the late 20th century, the secrets of Burgwüstung Steiner Häuschen were unearthed. Archaeologists uncovered the remnants of a large residential tower, measuring an impressive 20 by 11 meters. They also found a fortified outer ward, further evidence of the site’s importance. The city of Bonn recognized the historical significance of Burgwüstung Steiner Häuschen. Between 1985 and 1986, they carefully restored the exposed remains of the residential tower. Later, in 1988, a path was recreated based on historical designs. Today, the Burgwüstung Steiner Häuschen stands as a testament to the past. Its partially exposed and preserved walls offer a glimpse into medieval life. A plaque erected in 1990 by the Heimatverein Bonn-Oberkassel e.V. provides further information about this fascinating site.
