“BiMs mal wieder.” Does anyone know what that means? That’s the name of a song written for the B\u00fcrgerhaus in Meiendorf e.V.’s 50th anniversary.
Right here stands the B\u00fcrgerhaus in Meiendorf e.V. It is a cultural center with a rich history. It is a place for creative social and cultural events in northeast Hamburg.
Back in 1972 some engaged citizens founded a group. They called it B\u00fcrgerinitiative in Meiendorf. They wanted a neighborhood meeting place. The goal was to create a place for residents to connect. It was for the new housing development. This area was called Wildschwanbrook.
New schools were built. But there was no meeting place. This was a problem for almost five thousand young people. The B\u00fcrgerinitiative organized craft courses. They also arranged flea markets in nearby schools. There were disco nights for young people. Mother-child groups met here too.
For years the group had no home. But in 1978 the B\u00fcrgerinitiative in Meiendorf e.V. moved into this building. It was an unused school building at Saseler Stra\u00dfe 21.
The city of Hamburg provided money for socio-cultural projects. This helped the “BiM.” They hired staff and renovated the old school. In 1979 the group changed its name. It became B\u00fcrgerhaus in Meiendorf e.V. This showed it was for all citizens.
Today the B\u00fcrgerhaus in Meiendorf is one of twenty-five cultural centers in Hamburg. The Kulturbeh\u00f6rde supports it. The B\u00fcrgerhaus in Meiendorf e.V. runs it. Volunteers and a two-person team manage the center. Over two dozen instructors also work here. A caretaker couple keeps the building running. Volunteers help run the many events.
