Could a building hold the key to belonging? Here at the Bürgeramt, Amt für öffentliche Ordnung, Ausgleichsamt, Ausländerat/Migrationsrat, it does. For many, this isn’t just an office. It’s a gateway to becoming a Heidelberger. The Bürgeramt Mitte, located at Bergheimer Straße 69, serves the Bahnstadt, Bergheim, Südstadt, and Weststadt districts. This four-story building, with its hipped roof and dormer windows, isn’t just about paperwork. It’s about stories. Stories of new beginnings and building a life in a new city. Inside these walls, approximately 500 people each year receive their naturalization certificates. They transition from newcomers to citizens, adding their unique threads to the rich tapestry of Heidelberg. The Bürgeramt also houses the Amt für öffentliche Ordnung, responsible for public order within the city. The Ausgleichsamt and Ausländerat/Migrationsrat further contribute to the city’s administrative functions. While the Bürgeramt may not be a typical tourist attraction, it represents the heart of Heidelberg’s civic life. It’s a place where lives intersect, where stories unfold, and where the diverse community of Heidelberg comes together. The Bürgeramt, more than just an office, embodies the spirit of Heidelberg. It reflects a city that welcomes newcomers and embraces diversity. It’s a place where the journey to belonging begins.

“A splash of color on a canvas, isn’t that life itself?” mused a woman outside Atelier Galerie Hilbert. Atelier Galerie
