High above the Ailsbach valley, Rabenstein Castle stands defiantly. It is a testament to centuries of history. This is Saxony’s smallest medieval castle. Today, Burg Rabenstein is part of the Chemnitz Castle Hill Museum.

Let’s step back in time. Imagine the year 1188. Eschwin de Rabenstein built the first structure on this rocky outcrop. In 1219, the Schlüsselberg family took over, expanding the castle. Later, the Burgraves of Nuremberg gained control in 1349.

Rabenstein Castle was once much larger. Historical records show its walls stretched 180 meters. The castle enclosed an area of two hectares. Today, only the heart of that complex remains.

The Thirty Years’ War brought devastation. Rabenstein Castle was almost completely destroyed. It remained in ruins for many years. In 1742, the Rabenstein dynasty died out. The Counts of Schönborn acquired the manor. They added a baroque complex in 1830. King Ludwig I of Bavaria and his wife Theresie were guests.

The Counts of Schönburg owned the castle until 1975. In 1950, the City of Chemnitz acquired the complex. Extensive restoration work followed. A museum opened in 1959. Further restoration occurred in the 1980s and 1990s.

Today, Rabenstein Castle is a popular destination. Burg Rabenstein Event GmbH manages the castle since 2004. They completed renovations and brought the castle back to life. You can explore the castle’s elegant rooms. Consider attending one of the cultural or culinary events.

Take a guided tour. Discover the knights’ hall with its hunting frescoes. These frescoes date back to the early Baroque period. Note the Rabensteiner Schloss palace nearby. Johann Georg Siegert, a textile merchant, built it as a manor house.

Don’t miss the “Easter in Medieval Times” event. It occurs annually on Easter weekend. Rabenstein Castle has a rich history. It offers something for everyone. Saxony’s smallest castle holds many secrets.
