High above the Alster’s gentle waters stands Burg Henneberg. A miniature castle it is a captivating sight.
This isn’t just any castle. It’s Hamburg’s only castle. Many believe it’s also the smallest castle in the world. Burg Henneberg is a 1:4 scale replica of the original Henneberg Castle in Thuringia. Built between 1884 and 1887 it’s a testament to 19th-century castle romanticism. The Henneberg family of Poppenbüttel commissioned its construction. They used it as a family archive for two decades.
Imagine the Hennebergs. They lived in a grand estate. They built their miniature castle on a man-made hill. This hill. a 15-meter high “castle mountain” was created specifically for the Burg. It’s part of the beautiful 3.5-hectare Hennebergpark. The park itself is a masterpiece. Filled with exotic trees from Europe the USA China and Japan. The park is laid out in the style of an English landscape garden.
The Burg itself is a marvel. A main building stands tall with a 12-meter-high tower. There’s a small chapel overlooking the Alster. And of course a real knights’ hall. Its 29 square meters are surprisingly spacious. Light floods in through a skylight. From the knights’ hall you can access a charming gallery. A luxurious marble bathroom is also a surprise feature. A winding wooden staircase with 51 steps leads up to the tower.
The view from the top is breathtaking. Although the trees of Hamburg now mostly obscure it. The castle has experienced a tumultuous history. It fell into disrepair after years of neglect. Facing demolition in 1988 a private investor stepped in. They saved the castle. Today it stands as a testament to perseverance.
Since 2014 the non-profit Henneberg Castle Foundation has opened it to the public. Offering a varied cultural program. Concerts readings art exhibitions and even yoga courses are held within its walls. Or in fine weather at the Alster Open Air in the “Alsterphilharmonie”. The unique charm and excellent acoustics make every event special.
Burg Henneberg is more than a castle. It’s a cultural hub a historical landmark and a stunning piece of Hamburg’s hidden history. Its story is one of restoration and revival a reminder of the enduring power of preservation and the magic of a miniature castle on the banks of the Alster.
