Founded in 1851 the Bundesrealgymnasium Salzburg has a rich history. Initially established as the k k Unterrealschule it catered to middle-class boys. Classes were based on knowledge levels resulting in significant age differences among students. The goal was to provide a middle-level education. The school expanded to a six-class Oberrealschule in 1863 then a seven-year Realschule in 1870.
By 1927 located at Hanuschplatz the school became an eight-year Realschule with four-year lower and upper levels thanks to a new education law. In 1951 a branch opened in St Johann im Pongau. Three years later another opened in Hallein. These branches are now independent schools.
The Bundesrealgymnasium Salzburg as we know it emerged in 1962-63. The Bundesrealgymnasialverordnung made it a Bundesrealgymnasium. Girls were admitted in 1968-69. In 1970 the school moved to its present location on Akademiestrasse.
From 1997-98 the school focused on science and IT with project-based and lab work. Between 2003 and 2005 the building underwent renovations and expansion. New specialized classrooms a cafeteria with a terrace and an outdoor classroom were added.
The school’s mission is to equip students for a complex world. This is done by focusing on scientific understanding mathematical analysis and information technology. Students benefit from diverse approaches. This caters to individual talents and interests.
