This unassuming building in Potsdam holds the key to Germany’s security strategies and operations. Established as recently as 2008, the Bundespolizeipräsidium might seem new. However, it carries the legacy of the former Bundesgrenzschutz, the German Border Guard. The Bundespolizeipräsidium oversees a vast network of departments, coordinating everything from border control to counter-terrorism. What you see here is only the tip of the iceberg. 4300 employees work for the Bundespolizeipräsidium. Only about 800 are based here in Potsdam. The rest are spread across Germany in 11 regional directorates and numerous sub-units. This ensures a coordinated response to threats across various domains – land, air, and sea.
