High above Kuala Lumpur’s urban sprawl lies Bukit Gasing. It is a green lung shared by Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya. This forest reserve offers a refreshing escape.

Bukit Gasing was once a rubber estate. Nature has reclaimed it. Lush secondary forest thrives here today. Some trees are impressively large. The transformation took about 60 years.

Now, imagine this: you’re hiking here. The air is thick with humidity. You can feel it on your skin. Sunlight filters through the canopy. It dapples the forest floor.

Bukit Gasing is popular for nearby residents. They come to exercise and relax. Many trails suit all fitness levels. The highest point is about 160 meters. Locals call it ‘Top Hill’. Do not underestimate Bukit Gasing though. Some slopes are quite steep. One is even named Abu Baker Slope.

Hikers are caring people you know. You can hear snippets of their conversations. They care about their health and the environment.

In 2023, the entrance, pathway and signage were improved. Maps would be helpful if you want to explore Bukit Gasing.

Watch out for heavy-duty mosquitoes. They are so big, you can feel them land. Industrial-strength bug repellent is essential. Long sleeves and trousers are a good idea too.

Bukit Gasing has no shops or toilets. Bring your own water. You might see people walking dogs. That is a great place to do so. Dogs should be kept on a leash though. There are monkeys here.

Bukit Gasing is under constant development pressure. The Selangor side is a protected “green lung”. The Kuala Lumpur side lacks this protection. Some land was sold to contractors. This led to protests by residents and volunteers. They formed Friends of Bukit Gasing. Some areas became muddy and treeless.

Bukit Gasing offers ecological benefits. It provides recreational opportunities. It’s a habitat for wildlife and a source of oxygen and water.

There are three entrances to Bukit Gasing. The main entrance is off Jalan Gasing in Petaling Jaya. Another entrance is from Pantai Hill Park. The third is from Taman Rimba Bukit Kerinchi in Kuala Lumpur.

Trails connect Bukit Gasing and Taman Rimba Bukit Kerinchi. A popular loop trail takes three to four hours. It passes major landmarks in both parks. It requires stamina and caution. Especially during the rainy season.

You’ll find flat roads and dirt paths here. There are also steep slopes and wooden stairs. You might even cross a river. Trails are well-marked with signs. Apps like AllTrails can help you navigate.

Bukit Gasing is more than just a hill. It’s a testament to nature’s resilience. It’s a place for recreation and a reminder of the need for conservation. As you leave, remember the importance of protecting green spaces. These spaces are vital for our well-being and the environment.
