“A university building?” you might ask yourselves. That’s right. Here we are at Building 7 in Chiba. It stands as a place of learning and growth.
While Building 7 itself may not boast historical anecdotes readily available, Chiba Prefecture certainly does. Let’s discover Chiba’s story. It is a region that has seen remarkable transformation.
In 1983, Chiba Prefecture celebrated a population milestone. It exceeded five million residents. This surge stemmed from Tokyo’s expanding commuter belt. The Keiyo Industrial Zone’s development further fueled this growth.
To commemorate this achievement, the Chiba Port Tower was built. It opened in 1986. The tower stands 125.1 meters tall with four stories. Its lozenge-shaped cross-section is slender. Mirrored glass covers the exterior creating a blue shimmer.
Inside, visitors ascend to the fourth floor by elevator. They then descend to the third and second floors. The first floor hosts a shop with Chiba-related goods. There is also an exhibition room detailing Chiba Port’s role. A theater and kid’s room offer further attractions.
The second floor features a view room at 105 meters. A special luminous mural called “Aqua Fantasy” adorns the wall. After sunset, black lights illuminate this underwater scene. It creates a three-dimensional effect.
“Café La Plage” occupies the third floor at 109 meters. With 50 seats, guests can enjoy food and drinks. All while taking in the view. It’s even available for private events.
The fourth floor serves as the main observation deck. Here, at 113 meters, the view is stunning. An open space allows views of the sea while riding the elevator.
A dynamic damper sits atop the tower. This 15-ton system counteracts oscillations from wind and earthquakes. The tower can withstand winds up to 216 km/h. It can also endure earthquakes up to level 7.
From the observation floor, a 360-degree panorama unfolds. To the north, you might see Makuhari New City. Also visible are Chiba Marine Stadium, Makuhari Messe, and more. To the east, catch glimpses of Narita Airport.
Views to the west include Umihotaru, Haneda Airport, and Tokyo Tower. On clear days, Mount Fuji graces the horizon. To the south, JFE Steel and Tokyo Electric Power facilities come into view.
Keep in mind that from mid-November through December, Chiba Port Tower transforms. Christmas illuminations create a giant Christmas tree with 3,000 lights.
So, while we stand at Building 7, remember Chiba’s story. It is a story of growth, innovation, and resilience.
