“Elite from the city would come and congregate here.” That’s what they used to say about the Belle Isle Boathouse. This grand structure stands before us a testament to Detroit’s vibrant past. The Belle Isle Boathouse is more than just a building. It’s a landmark steeped in history and architectural beauty.

Designed by Detroit architect Alpheus Chittenden the Belle Isle Boathouse was built in 1902. Its design blends Beaux-Arts and Classical Revival styles. Intricate woodwork adorns the building. Look closely at the balustrades. You will see sea horses and ornate dolphins carved into them.

For over a century the Belle Isle Boathouse has been home to Detroit’s only rowing club. This club boasts an impressive legacy. It has produced 19 Olympians and 500 national champions. The club is better known nationally and internationally than it is here in Detroit.

But the Belle Isle Boathouse’s history extends beyond rowing. It was once the home of the Detroit Boat Club. The building served as a popular social center. It hosted numerous events and gatherings for its members. Imagine the grand ballroom filled with music and laughter. Picture Detroit’s elite dining and dancing within these walls. The Belle Isle Boathouse was a bustling venue. It featured dining rooms and a bar. The Island Room once housed a significant art collection. The bar room last updated in the 1960s was a popular spot. Captains of industry would stop here. They would talk about the day’s events and make side deals.

The Belle Isle Boathouse faces significant challenges today. Years of harsh weather and repair difficulties have taken their toll. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources deemed the building structurally unsound in 2022. In 2023 the DNR condemned the Belle Isle Boathouse after an exterior porch collapsed.

There is a glimmer of hope. A movement to save the Belle Isle Boathouse has gained steam. State officials have requested proposals to rehabilitate the building. These proposals are currently under evaluation. The deadline for acceptance by the DNR was July 31.

The Detroit Boat Club has a rich history dating back to 1839. It is the oldest boat club in the United States. Its first boathouse was a small structure near Randolph Street. The club played a role in renaming Hog Island to Belle Isle. This was done in honor of Isabella “Belle” Cass.

The Belle Isle Boathouse is the last surviving historic rowing boathouse on the Detroit River. It has been occupied for 121 years by the Detroit Boat Club Crew. The building is no longer affiliated with the Detroit Boat Club. It is now operated under the sponsorship of Friends of Detroit Rowing. The Belle Isle Boathouse stands as a symbol of Detroit’s past. Its future remains uncertain but its legacy endures.
