A compass pointing to the Mississippi. That’s how Building 251 started its life.

Before you stands the Four Seasons Hotel New Orleans. This wasn’t always a luxury hotel. It began as the International House and International Trade Mart. It opened in 1968. This was a big deal. It celebrated New Orleans’ 250th anniversary.

Designed by Edward Durell Stone a famous modernist architect Building 251 was truly impressive. At 33 stories tall it held the title of tallest building in New Orleans for two years. Imagine the pride New Orleans felt. This wasn’t just any building. It was the first World Trade Center in the entire world. Its location was perfect. At the base of Canal Street it sat right beside the mighty Mississippi River.

The building’s compass shape wasn’t just for looks. Each section pointed to a cardinal direction. It was a nod to the river’s importance and New Orleans’ place in global trade. It was the headquarters of the Port of New Orleans. Think of all the goods that passed through here. Think of all the stories these walls could tell.

In 2014 Building 251 received a major makeover. It was recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. Then came a three-year multi-million dollar restoration. It was transformed into the luxurious hotel and residences you see today. It even gained an extra floor. Now there’s a fantastic open-air observation deck. It offers 360-degree views of the river and the entire city. It’s a brilliant tribute to the city’s resilience and rebirth.

So next time you look at Building 251 remember its story. Remember the history it holds. Remember its role in shaping New Orleans into the vibrant city it is today. A true testament to ambition and New Orleans’ enduring spirit.
