Marvel at Building 105 a hidden gem in Detroit’s New Center area. This isn’t just any building. It’s a testament to Detroit’s roaring twenties and the rise of the telephone.

Building 105 is the Michigan Bell Madison Central Office. Architect Wirt Rowland designed it. He designed all Michigan Bell buildings from 1922 to 1930. Construction started in 1928 and finished in 1929.

The automotive boom fueled Michigan Bell’s incredible growth. More cars meant more people more phones. This required massive central offices. These buildings needed strong floors for heavy equipment. High ceilings were also essential. Rowland had to design a building that was both functional and beautiful. He had to incorporate an existing two-story building. That building is now hidden inside Building 105. It’s behind a wall in the courtyard.

The design is ingenious. The western half is a simple rectangle. The eastern half is more complex. It features a recessed courtyard. Notice the limestone cladding. See the chevron designs above the windows? The bright yellow-orange bricks add a festive touch. The tall section on the left houses the elevators.

Look closely at the details. The windows are arranged in unique patterns. These patterns echo Rowland’s designs in other Detroit landmarks. The rounded stone piping is similar to that on the Greater Penobscot Building. The stepped arches resemble those on the Guardian Building.

Building 105 is more than just a building. It’s a piece of Detroit history. It’s a stunning example of Art Deco architecture. It’s a silent witness to the city’s growth and innovation. Take a moment to appreciate its unique beauty its hidden stories its enduring legacy. It’s a Detroit treasure.
