From a reformer’s heart to a city’s soul. Here at the Bugenhagen-Denkmal, we uncover the story of Johannes Bugenhagen, a man whose influence shaped Hamburg’s destiny. The Bugenhagen-Denkmal, a bronze statue, captures him holding the Hamburgische Kirchenordnung, the church order he crafted. Bugenhagen, a close friend of Martin Luther, arrived in Hamburg in 1526. He was tasked with establishing a new church order, a mission that proved challenging. He faced resistance, especially from the Cistercian nuns. Yet, after three years, he succeeded. This very monument stands as a testament to his enduring legacy. It originally resided in the courtyard of the Johanneum, the first public Latin school in Hamburg, which Bugenhagen helped found. The school, initially located in Hamburg’s city center, later moved to Winterhude, and the Bugenhagen-Denkmal moved with it. The monument was unveiled on June 24, 1885, Bugenhagen’s 400th birthday. The inscription on the pedestal reads “Johannes Bugenhagen,” along with dedications to the founder of the Johanneum by the citizens of Hamburg. The statue was created by Engelbert Pfeiffer, a sculptor known for other prominent works in Hamburg, including the St. Ansgar-Denkmal and the statue of Graf Adolf III. The Bugenhagen-Denkmal serves not just as a tribute to a reformer, but also as a symbol of Hamburg’s embrace of new ideas. It reflects the city’s rich history.
