Hidden in plain sight, the Bugatti Plaque whispers a tale of automotive genius. Right here, at 19 Rue de la Nuée Bleue, in a space once belonging to Emile Mathis’s father, Ettore Bugatti dreamt up automotive legends. The Bugatti Plaque commemorates this very spot. In 1904, within the walls of the Hotel de Paris, Ettore Bugatti sketched the designs for the renowned Hermès. This plaque marks the birthplace of an icon. Ettore Bugatti, born in Italy but a Frenchman at heart, found his home in Alsace. He moved to Molsheim in late 1909, a region then part of the German Reich. Alsace, a land of shifting borders and rich industry, offered Bugatti the perfect blend of skilled labor and strategic location. Bugatti established his factory in a former dyeworks in 1910, starting with the Type 13. Despite Alsace’s return to France eight years later, Bugatti’s work continued, unfazed by the political tides. His legacy solidified with the Type 35, a racing car that dominated the 1920s, securing over 2,000 victories. From racing triumphs to the luxurious Type 41 Royale, Bugatti’s creations became synonymous with French automotive excellence. The Bugatti Plaque, therefore, represents not just a location, but the genesis of a legend, the spirit of innovation, and the enduring legacy of Ettore Bugatti.
