Before its renovation, Bugak Hall felt narrow and old. Students often ordered delivery food and worked on assignments in its lobby. The head director of Kookmin University wanted Bugak Hall redesigned. He hoped that it would be a pleasant place to study.
Professor Kai-chun Kim conceived Bugak Hall’s new design. He aimed to create a space where students could feel happy. He wanted to stimulate intellectual curiosity. He dreamed of a place filled with freedom.
Unfamiliarity was a key element in Kim’s design. Blue pallets and patterned tiles were chosen as materials. Kim wanted Bugak Hall to have its own unique character. He used pallets for the walls. He wanted to stimulate students’ fixed ideas. He aimed for them to gain a wider insight into the world.
Kim also considered economic conditions. He wanted to use students’ tuition money wisely. He found pallets through Google. These pallets were cheap and suitable materials. They helped Bugak Hall develop its own aura. The pallet walls give a shape that has no shape.
Reactions to the new design were diverse. Some found it mismatched and disharmonious. Kim was okay with this. He believes a design that considers all people doesn’t exist. Others said Bugak Hall is like having its shape without shape. Kim agreed with that thought.
Bugak Hall has new classrooms including the Team&Team Class. This classroom supports innovative learning. The printing office introduced a ticket number system for efficiency. The water purifiers were replaced to ensure a constant supply.
Several food options are available in Bugak Hall. Students can enjoy Baskin Robbins ice cream. They also can cook instant ramen using the new cookers. Cafe Mirr kiosks allow for easy ordering.
Bugak Hall also houses a Coopsket convenience store. This store operates 24 hours. Students can purchase snacks at K-Gimbap. They can also enjoy bubble tea at Gongcha and sandwiches at Subway. A copy room provides printing services.
Today Bugak Hall is a campus-like campus. It offers intellectual curiosity, longing, dreams, power, and pleasure. It stands as a testament to innovative design. It fosters a unique atmosphere on the Kookmin University campus.
