Hidden beneath the cloak of history, Buddinge Batteri whispers tales of a time when cannons roared and soldiers stood vigilant. Buddinge Batteri isn’t just a grassy mound. It’s a time capsule buried in the landscape, a silent sentinel of Copenhagen’s defenses. Constructed between 1888 and 1889, Buddinge Batteri played a crucial role in the northern front of Copenhagen’s fortifications. It was a vital link in a chain of defenses, supporting the larger Gladsaxe Fort and Bagsværd Fort. Imagine the scene: soldiers bustling about, the metallic scent of cannons heavy in the air, the constant threat of war looming. Buddinge Batteri’s mission was clear: protect the flanks of the larger forts and prevent enemy advances. Its six 12 cm iron cannons, M1885 models with a range of 7.6 km, were a formidable deterrent. They were stored nearby and brought to the battery when needed, ready to unleash their might. During World War I, the battery was fully manned and operational. A fascinating anecdote involves the battery’s first commander. He decided that the battery needed a command post. Using his own funds and the labor of his men, he built a small, reinforced concrete command station within one of the traverses. This small structure, equipped with a telephone, light, heat, and a map table, significantly improved the battery’s operational efficiency. It’s a testament to the ingenuity and dedication of the men stationed here. Unfortunately, the commander never received reimbursement for his expenses. He had failed to obtain prior ministerial approval for his “fortress construction.” He had even used cement, a material expressly forbidden by the 1894 Defense Agreement. After World War I, the battery was decommissioned in 1920 and sold. It later served the Geodetic Institute and then the National Mapping and Cadastre Agency. Today, Buddinge Batteri stands as a testament to a bygone era. Although time and development have taken their toll, remnants of the battery’s structures remain, offering a glimpse into its strategic past. The battery is partially protected as a historical monument, its stories etched into the very earth. As you stand here, imagine the echoes of history, the rumble of cannons, the quiet determination of the soldiers. Buddinge Batteri, more than just a piece of land, embodies a chapter in Copenhagen’s history, a story of defense, ingenuity, and the silent passage of time.
