What secrets does a former fireproof furniture storage hold? We stand before the Buddhistisches Zentrum Heidelberg. It’s not your typical temple. This spiritual haven resides on the 4th and 5th floors of a century-old building. Originally designed to protect furniture from flames, it now safeguards inner peace. The Buddhistisches Zentrum Heidelberg, part of the Diamond Way Buddhist lineage, was established in 1981. A vibrant community of 70 to 80 practitioners calls this place home. They gather to meditate and study the teachings of the Buddha. The center’s history is a journey of its own. Starting in 1982, the Buddhistisches Zentrum Heidelberg moved several times. It occupied spaces in Handschuhsheim, the Old Town, Bergheim, and even Leimen. It finally settled in the Weststadt district. Over the decades, prominent Buddhist teachers have graced this center with their presence. His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa visited in 2004 during his first trip to Germany. Other notable figures include Shamar Rinpoche, Lopön Tsechu Rinpoche, and of course, Lama Ole Nydahl and Hannah Nydahl. If you’re curious to learn more about the Buddhistisches Zentrum Heidelberg, Thursday evenings are ideal. Explanations about Diamond Way Buddhism are offered at 7:30 PM before the meditation session. This, and the meditation sessions offered four evenings a week, are free of charge. The Buddhistisches Zentrum Heidelberg welcomes everyone. Step inside, and perhaps, you’ll discover your own inner sanctuary within these repurposed walls.
