Does the name Phnom Penh ring a bell? It got its name from Wat Phnom. I will tell you about the Buddha Stupa here.

Wat Phnom is the most sacred temple in Cambodia. It serves as Phnom Penh’s spiritual symbol. People come from far and wide to pray here. They also admire the pagoda’s scenery. The story of Wat Phnom starts in the 14th century. A wealthy lady named Daun Penh found four Buddha statues. They were inside a Koki tree floating in the river. Daun Penh built a wooden temple on a man-made hill. She enshrined the sacred artifacts there. This was the start of Wat Phnom.

King Ponhea Yat renovated the temple in the 15th century. He also built a hermitage hut on the mountaintop. After he died, a stupa was built to house his remains. This ensured his eternal connection to the revered place. The Buddha Stupa enshrined King Ponhea Yat. He relocated the capital of the Khmer Empire from Angkor to Phnom Penh in 1422.

Stepping into Wat Phnom, you will see a blend of architecture and spiritual reverence. The temple’s interior has a central altar complex. It is surrounded by sculptures, flowers and candles. There is also a large bronze Buddha image. Murals show the Buddha’s previous lives. They tell ancient tales of enlightenment.

In the southwest corner is a shrine to Lady Penh. It honors her role in Wat Phnom’s creation. A few feet north, you’ll see a shrine to the genie Preah Chau. Guardian spirits with iron bats stand at the entrance. Next to the statue are drawings of Confucius. There are also two Chinese sculptures of sages. An eight-armed Vishnu statue blends Hindu and Buddhist art.

To the west stands the stone Buddha Stupa. It is intricately carved and visible from afar. This stupa is King Ponhea Yat’s final resting place. At the entrance, shamans offer fortune telling. Guests receive cards. They place them on their foreheads before drawing one. The shaman tells them what the future holds.

Originally, stupas were sacred places for relics. Now, they mainly serve as tombs. They hold the remains of the dead. Stupas can also be decorative. Even lime boxes for betel have a stupa shape. They can also be built as offerings.

Wat Phnom’s Buddha Stupa is a symbol of Cambodia’s spiritual and cultural heritage. It is a must-visit in Phnom Penh. Its serene ambiance, architecture and history make it special. Remember Lady Penh, King Ponhea Yat and the Buddha’s teachings.
