How many cemeteries do you think a town needs? You might be surprised to know that the Spring, Texas area has quite a few. One of the most historic is Budde Cemetery. Located in the heart of what was once the Budde family property, this cemetery has borne witness to the growth of Spring for nearly 150 years. The cemetery is unique in that it’s actually split down the middle by a fence, a testament to a land dispute between two German families. Don’t let the fence fool you though. Both sides of Budde Cemetery hold the stories of Spring’s pioneers. One such pioneer was Carl Wunsche Sr., a German immigrant who arrived in 1840. He, along with many of his descendants, found their final resting place here. His son, Carl Wunsche Jr., continued his legacy by developing schools and donating land for what is now Spring Cypress Road. As you walk through the cemetery, you’ll notice familiar names – Wunsche, of course, but also the founders of Immanuel Church and their families. Budde Cemetery is more than just a burial ground. It’s a reflection of Spring’s history, a place where the past is honored and remembered.
