Trading deer antlers for whiskey? That’s how the Buckhorn Saloon and Museum began. This San Antonio landmark stands as a testament to Texas history and quirky collections. Let’s step inside.

The Buckhorn Saloon and Museum was established in 1881 by Albert Friedrich. He was a young entrepreneur with a unique idea. Friedrich accepted antlers, horns, and pelts as payment for drinks. This unusual practice led to an extraordinary collection.

Imagine the saloon’s walls slowly filling with horns. Friedrich, a skilled furniture maker, crafted these trophies into chairs and tables. Even Kaiser Wilhelm admired and sought after his creations. Friedrich’s wife, Emile, contributed too. She used rattlesnake rattles to create decorative folk art.

The Buckhorn Saloon became a popular spot. Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders frequented the establishment. They were even rumored to recruit here. In 1898, Friedrich’s father presented Roosevelt with a chair made of 62 American bison horns. It was a thank you for his patronage.

Prohibition posed a challenge. Friedrich couldn’t sell alcohol anymore. He adapted by turning the Buckhorn into Albert’s Curio Store and Cafe. Admission was charged to view the ever-growing collection.

The Lone Star Brewing Company purchased the collection in 1956. They restored the Buckhorn Saloon at the brewery. New additions included a Hall of Fins in 1964 and a Hall of Feathers in 1973.

The Buckhorn changed hands again in 1997. Albert Friedrich’s granddaughter and her husband bought back the collection. They moved it to its current location on Houston Street.

Today, the Buckhorn Museum features wildlife from around the world. Over 520 species are represented. You can see a 78-point Brady Buck and a massive black marlin. The museum even boasts the first gorilla ever on public display in the United States.

Don’t miss the Texas Ranger Museum. Authentic artifacts tell the story of these legendary lawmen. See firearms, badges, and photographs. Explore Ranger Town, a recreation of San Antonio at the turn of the century. It includes a replica Buckhorn Saloon and Bonnie and Clyde’s getaway car.

The Buckhorn also offers oddities. Discover rattlesnake art and cowboy memorabilia. Explore the “Carnival of Curiosities” and the “American Sideshow.” A wax museum depicts historic events in Texas.
