“Offenbach? Isn’t that near Frankfurt?” you might ask. You’re absolutely right. We’re here at the Buchrain district, a southwestern finger of Offenbach am Main, nudging up against Frankfurt and Neu-Isenburg. Imagine a city within a city. That’s Buchrain. While officially part of Offenbach, Buchrain has its own distinct identity, its own stories to tell. In July 2019, Buchrain became one of twelve officially recognized districts, carved out of what was previously an undefined area. Today, over 4,000 people call Buchrain home, a community nestled alongside the bustling A661 Autobahn. While the roar of traffic might be a constant companion, Buchrain also offers pockets of tranquility. If you are interested in education, Buchrain houses the modern building of the Leibnizschule. This building, constructed in the 1970s, accommodates the middle and upper school levels, as well as the school’s sports field. A curious fact: the original Leibnizschule building is actually located in the nearby Westend district of Offenbach. Buchrain’s location makes it a crossroads. The A3 Autobahn briefly touches the southern tip, while the B43 slices through east to west, connecting Buchrain to the wider world. While the Frankfurt-Bebraer railway line runs through Buchrain, it sadly offers no stop here. A ghost of transportation past lingers in the form of the Offenbach industrial railway, which served the area until 1993. Now, city buses weave their way through the streets, connecting Buchrain to the heart of Offenbach and beyond. So, as you stand here, on the edge of Offenbach, take a moment to appreciate Buchrain. It’s a blend of old and new, a place of transit and community, a small piece of the larger puzzle that makes up this vibrant region.
