Gazing across Buchholz, can you sense the echoes of its past? This tranquil Dortmund quarter, once part of Westhofen, holds a unique story. Buchholz became part of Dortmund in 1975. A shift in boundaries, a change in allegiance. Before 1975, Buchholz belonged to the rural community of Westhofen. This area, including Buchholz, was originally part of the Dortmund district. Then in 1887, it switched to the newly formed Hörde district. Imagine the ripples of this administrative change through the small community of Buchholz. The Hörde district was dissolved in 1929. Westhofen, along with Schwerte, became part of the Iserlohn district. More boundary shifts, more adjustments for the residents of Buchholz. Then came the major change in 1975. While most of Westhofen joined Schwerte in the Unna district, Buchholz took a different path. It was incorporated into Dortmund, specifically becoming part of the Hörde borough. A tiny section of the original community, a mere 1.70 km² with about 625 residents at the time, found itself woven into the fabric of a much larger city. Buchholz, nestled within Dortmund’s Hörde borough, tells a tale of changing borders and evolving identities. By the end of 2018, Buchholz was home to 498 residents. This close-knit community, with its unique history, offers a glimpse into the intricate tapestry of Dortmund’s growth and development.
