“He stares out at us doesn’t he?” That’s how my grandmother always described the Buchhalter sculpture. She’d lived near it her whole life. She used to sit on the nearby bench watching the people pass by.

The Buchhalter Sculpture. It’s not just a statue. It’s a Dusseldorf icon. A bronze bust. A silent observer of our city’s ever-changing landscape. For decades it’s stood here a fixture of Dusseldorf’s artistic legacy.

The Kunstpalast museum boasts an impressive collection of sculptures. It contains more than 1300 pieces. This collection spans centuries. From medieval works to pieces from the 19th century. The museum’s focus on Baroque sculptures is especially noteworthy. Many pieces are by Gabriel Grupello. He was court sculptor to the Elector Palatine. The Elector resided in Dusseldorf for twenty years starting in 1695. The Buchhalter however isn’t from that era. It occupies a more modern space within the city’s artistic narrative. It adds to the rich tapestry of Dusseldorf’s artistic heritage.

My grandmother told me stories about it. Stories of artists sketching it. Of children playing hide-and-seek behind it. Of lovers whispering secrets nearby. It has witnessed countless moments both joyful and solemn.

She told me that some say the intensity of the sculpture’s gaze changes with the weather. In the harsh Dusseldorf winter it is stern. In summer the light makes it seem kinder. I never quite believed her. But then again I’ve never really looked at the Buchhalter Sculpture with my grandmother’s eyes.

The Buchhalter. A figure forever contemplating Dusseldorf’s past present and future. A testament to the enduring power of art to capture and convey emotion. A silent witness to the lives lived around it.

As you stand here today take a moment to look into those bronze eyes. What do you see? What stories does the Buchhalter tell you?
