“A cultural city” is what Bucheon calls itself. Today we are standing in front of Bucheon Dong Middle School. But what does that mean for this middle school?

Bucheon Dong Middle School is located in a city with a rich history. Bucheon’s history stretches back thousands of years.

Once upon a time, Bucheon was known as Jubuto during the Goguryeo Dynasty. Later King Taejo of the Goryeo Dynasty renamed it Suju. Modern Bucheon as we know it took shape in 1988. In the 1990s, Sang-Dong and Jung-Dong became new urban areas. This rapid growth transformed Bucheon into a bustling city.

Bucheon is serious about its culture. The city boasts many museums and festivals. There are also beautiful botanical gardens. The Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra began its performances in 1988. One of Bucheon’s main events is the Bucheon International Film Festival. It started in 1997 and occurs annually. The festival showcases diverse genres like comedy, romance, action, and fantasy.

Before its urban development, Bucheon was known for its peach orchards. That is why the peach tree is Bucheon’s official plant. The peach flower is its official flower and the falcon is its official bird.

Bucheon emphasizes education. It has numerous elementary, middle, and high schools. There are many academies too. These academies provide education from kindergarten through high school.

The city has developed a lot of public transportation. There are subway lines and bus routes to help with getting around Bucheon.

One notable individual with ties to Bucheon is Hwang Hee-chan. He is a professional footballer. Although born in Chuncheon, Hwang’s family moved to Bucheon shortly after his birth. He lived there until he was eleven. Known as “Hwangso” or “Bull”, he plays for Wolverhampton Wanderers and the South Korean national team.

Jung-dong station is nearby. This station is on Seoul Subway Line 1 and the Gyeongin Line.
