In the heart of Milan, nestled between bustling city life and tranquil green spaces, lies the captivating district of Bruzzano. Bruzzano isn’t just another neighborhood. It’s a place steeped in history, a district whose roots stretch back to the Roman era. The name itself echoes this ancient past, derived from “Bruttianum,” a nod to the Roman citizen from Bruttium (modern-day Calabria) who once owned this land. Imagine, centuries ago, this area as a sprawling agricultural estate, the “fundus Bruttianum,” a testament to the Roman influence that shaped Milan’s earliest days. The first written records acknowledging Bruzzano as an independent “comune” date back to 1346. However, the heart of Bruzzano, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, has an even longer history, with evidence suggesting its existence as early as 1011. For centuries, Bruzzano stood as its own municipality. This changed in 1869 when it merged with Affori, Bresso, and Dergano to create the “Comune di Affori e Uniti.” This newly formed municipality, later renamed simply Affori in 1912, was eventually annexed by Milan in 1923. Bruzzano’s story doesn’t end with its incorporation into Milan. In the 20th century, Bruzzano transformed from a primarily agricultural community into an industrial hub. Today, while some industries have faded, the service sector is on the rise. Bruzzano has experienced significant urban development, expanding both outwards, limited only by the presence of Parco Nord, and upwards, as evidenced by the 18-story residential towers on Via Vincenzo da Seregno. Bruzzano’s transformation from a Roman estate to an independent comune to a thriving district within Milan is a testament to its resilience. A visit to Bruzzano isn’t just a stroll through a neighborhood; it’s a journey through time.
