Ever wondered what lies beneath Brussels’ vibrant streets? Right before you stands the Brussels-North wastewater treatment plant a marvel of modern engineering. Its unassuming exterior belies its vital role in the city’s history and its ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility.

The Brussels-North wastewater treatment plant wasn’t always here. For centuries the Senne River served as Brussels’ natural sewer. This led to disastrous consequences. In the 16th century overflowing sewage caused fatal epidemics. At the end of the 19th century the city began covering the Senne. It vanished beneath boulevards. The river’s course was altered in the 1950s. Civil engineering projects completely hid the river. It only resurfaces at the plant’s location.

The 1980s brought a shift. A comprehensive wastewater management plan aimed to revive the Senne. This plan involved treating wastewater from three sub-basins. These basins are the South basin the North basin and the Woluwe basin. The Brussels-North plant handles the wastewater from the North and Woluwe basins. It has a significant capacity of 1400000 inhabitant equivalents.

The plant’s construction was a massive undertaking. It began in 2002. The project involved building the plant itself. It also included constructing a 65 km sewage collector along the Willebroek Canal. Connecting the plant to the existing sewage network was crucial. Aquiris a consortium led by Veolia Water won the contract. They were responsible for designing building and operating the plant for 20 years.

The plant’s operation commenced in March 2007. This marked a new era in Brussels’ wastewater management. It ensured cleaner water and a healthier environment. Today the Brussels-North wastewater treatment plant stands as a testament to human ingenuity. It’s a vital piece of Brussels’ infrastructure.
