Ever wondered why a corner of Berlin feels a bit like Belgium? Welcome to the Brüsseler Kiez. It is also known as the Belgisches Viertel. Here the streets echo with Belgian names.

The Brüsseler Kiez finds its heart along Brüsseler Straße. This vibrant area stands out. All streets bear names of Belgian cities and regions. It is like a mini-Belgium nestled in Berlin’s Wedding district.

The Brüsseler Kiez is defined by its borders. These borders are Luxemburger Straße, Augustenburger Platz, Amrumer Straße, Seestraße, Müllerstraße, and Leopoldplatz. These streets mark its unique territory. The Kiez was once larger. The expansion of Luxemburger Straße in the 1960s shifted its boundary.

Architecturally, the Brüsseler Kiez is charming. It largely retains its late 19th-century buildings. Many structures date back to the Gründerzeit. A walk here reveals blocks built in a perimeter style. Courtyards hold garden spaces adding to the area’s appeal. Gas lanterns lit the streets until 2019. Some street pumps still remain as relics of the past.

The residential blocks along Ostender Straße have protected status since the 1990s. These blocks feature inner courtyards. They date back to the 1920s. The area is part of an urban development program. It aims to revitalize active urban centers. A preservation statute protects almost all residential blocks since 2016.

Life in the Brüsseler Kiez pulses with activity. The Berliner Hochschule für Technik is located here. Also the Ernst-Schering-Gesamtschule is in the Kiez. Several kindergartens serve young families. Five public playgrounds offer space for children. Sports facilities exist on Zeppelinplatz.

For cultural enrichment, visit the Rathaus Wedding. It hosts a municipal art gallery. Shopping is easy with various options. Small shops, a food cooperative, and late-night stores dot the area. The Cittipoint shopping center is located at Brüsseler Ecke Müllerstraße. Also the shops along Müllerstraße are nearby. Some betting offices exist at Brüsseler Straße Ecke Genter Straße.

A traditional weekly market brightens the area. It takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Find it on the parking lot behind Rathaus Wedding. Sadly, few traditional Berlin corner pubs remain. Those that do are mostly on Brüsseler Straße. Since 2014, a microbrewery operates on Antwerpener Straße. Several restaurants add to the Kiez’s culinary scene.

The Brüsseler Kiez boasts notable buildings and facilities. The Anti-Kriegs-Museum is found here. The Deutsches Herzzentrum Berlin is also nearby. The Berliner Hochschule für Technik has a campus here. Visit the Max-Beckmann-Saal with the Musiktheater Atze. The Kapernaum-Kirche is a landmark. The Rathaus Wedding serves as the district’s administrative center. The Schiller-Bibliothek provides literary resources. Also the Ernst-Schering-Gesamtschule has historical significance. The Stromversorgungsstützpunkt Zeppelin is now an atelier house. Admire the residential complexes on Ostender Straße and Zeppelinplatz. The former Institut für Zuckerindustrie is another protected building. The Zeppelinplatz park provides green space.

The Brüsseler Kiez has transformed into one of Berlin’s first “Kiezblocks”. This concept from Barcelona aims to reduce through traffic in residential areas. Antwerpener Straße has become a bicycle street. New bicycle parking spaces have been created.

Many streets carry names inspired by Belgium. Brüsseler Straße is named after Brussels. Ostender Straße takes its name from Ostende. Limburger Straße honors the province of Limburg. Genter Straße is named after Ghent. Antwerpener Straße pays tribute to Antwerp. Lütticher Straße is named after Liège.

The Zeppelinplatz has an interesting history. It commemorates Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin’s visit to Berlin in 1909. The park was redesigned in the 1980s. It features lawns, trees, seating, and a large playground.

Since 2012, the Förderverein Brüsseler Kiez e. V. supports local projects. It seeks to improve the neighborhood through citizen engagement. The Brüsseler Kiez continues to evolve. It balances historical charm with modern urban living.
