The Ashton Canal played a vital role. It facilitated movement of raw materials and finished goods. James Brindley surveyed the Rochdale Canal in 1765. His work gave industrialists the confidence to build cotton mills.

The Brunswick Mill witnessed changes in power. From beam engines to horizontal engines, and finally electricity. It was one of the first mills in Manchester to convert to electric power. This adaptation ensured its continued operation.

Henry Bannerman from Stalybridge took over the Brunswick Mill. He used part of it as a shirt factory. In the 1930s the Lancashire Cotton Corporation acquired it. Courtaulds followed in 1964. Production ceased in 1967.

The Brunswick Mill is a Grade II listed building. Its architecture is a reminder of its industrial past. The building’s structure got this classification in June 1994.
