Here in the heart of Frankfurt’s Höchst district stands the Bruno-Asch-Anlage a small park with a big story. This unassuming green space holds a piece of Frankfurt’s history a testament to a man whose life was tragically cut short.

The Bruno-Asch-Anlage wasn’t always a park. In 1926 it was created in the expressive style of the era. It served as a grand entrance for travelers arriving at the Höchst train station. Imagine the scene a striking visual for all who disembarked. Its design reflected the artistic movements of the time.

World War II brought significant changes. The Bruno-Asch-Anlage was transformed into a wheat field. After the war a secret bunker was built beneath the surface. Can you imagine the layers of history buried beneath your feet? The park’s past remains hidden yet palpable.

Despite its deteriorated condition in 2003 the Bruno-Asch-Anlage was recognized for its historical significance. It was granted landmark protection the sole expressionist park in Frankfurt. From 2010 to 2013 it was painstakingly restored. The renovation cost 650000 Euros. An additional 230000 Euros was dedicated to the fountain’s restoration. This highlights the city’s commitment to preserving this unique piece of history.

The centerpiece of the Bruno-Asch-Anlage is the Seiler Fountain. Created by the Frankfurt sculptor Paul Seiler this hexagonal fountain features four cascading water basins. The top is a stylized artichoke a unique artistic touch. It’s a beautiful sight especially now after its meticulous restoration.

Named in 1990 after Bruno Asch a local SPD politician and former mayor of Höchst the park serves as a memorial. Bruno Asch was a socialist and a Jew forced into exile in 1933. Tragically he took his own life in 1940 upon the German invasion of the Netherlands. The park’s restoration is a poignant tribute to this remarkable individual and a part of Frankfurt’s complex history. So here we stand surrounded by green remembering the past. The Bruno-Asch-Anlage’s quiet beauty speaks volumes. It’s a place to reflect on history and the human spirit.
