In 1219, a name first echoed in the Dortmund annals: Godefridus de Brouninchusen. This marks the earliest documented mention of Brünninghausen. Today, Brünninghausen stands as a southern suburb of Dortmund, nestled within the Hombruch district. It’s a place where history whispers through the leaves of ancient trees and the remnants of grand estates. Brünninghausen is more than just a name on a map. It’s a tapestry woven with threads of noble families, bustling farms, and the quiet growth of a community.

Brünninghausen sits close to beloved recreational havens like the Dortmund Zoo. Its charm lies in its mixed residential landscape, where small high-rise buildings meet rows of single-family homes. This blend creates a unique character, a quiet harmony between urban convenience and suburban peace. The nearby Rombergpark, a botanical garden with trees over a century old, survived the ravages of World War II. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of nature and a peaceful retreat for residents and visitors alike.

The heart of Brünninghausen beats with a rich history. The area boasts a history interwoven with the rise and fall of prominent families. The von Brünninghausen family, whose presence graced the area until around 1300, left their indelible mark. Later, the Nordkerke family, commemorated by Nordkirchenstrasse, took up residence, adding their chapter to Brünninghausen’s story. In 1350, they constructed the water castle, Schloss Brünninghausen. The Romberg family then acquired the estate, transforming it into a grand castle. This “Schloss Romberg,” as locals called it, included a mighty corner tower from 1571, eventually becoming the site of a hotel and the Wihoga Hotel Management School. Today, the grounds, acquired by the city of Dortmund in 1927, serve as a cherished recreational space, with the remaining structures preserved as historical monuments.

Brünninghausen’s history isn’t confined to grand castles. Two other significant estates existed within the present-day area: the Brünninghauser Schultenhof and the Mellinghaus farm. A fire tragically consumed the Schultenhof in 1908. This court, originally part of the Brünninghausen estate, became the largest in the village. The Mellinghaus farm stood where the von Brünninghausen family once resided. In 1583, Dietrich Mellinghaus took ownership. His life met a tragic end in 1622, murdered by Spanish soldiers while attempting to retrieve stolen horses. It was only in 1856, long after Napoleon’s decree to liberate farmers, that the Mellinghaus family fully acquired the farm.

Beyond its aristocratic heritage, Brünninghausen held a crucial role in Dortmund’s industrial development. Coal mining was a significant activity, with the prominent Glückauf Erbstollen mine shaping the local economy. The area’s sporting pride shines through FC Brünninghausen, whose football team competes in the Oberliga Westfalen. This blend of history, nature, and community spirit is what truly defines Brünninghausen, a place where the echoes of the past resonate within a vibrant present.
