What stories lie beneath our feet? This unassuming ground we stand on holds the history of the Brown-Beard Cemetery. This place, once known as the Pentecost Graveyard, is more than just a collection of headstones. It’s a tapestry woven from the lives of early settlers, soldiers, and families who helped shape this land.

The Brown-Beard Cemetery, established in 1841, takes us back to the days of the Big Creek Settlement. It began with the burial of George S. Pentecost, an “Old 300” colonist. Think about it. These were the pioneers who answered the call of a new land, their lives etched into the very fabric of Texas history.

Here lies George S. Pentecost alongside six of his children and their spouses. One such son-in-law, Samuel Pharr, also an “Old 300” colonist, owned the 1831 land grant on which the Brown-Beard Cemetery rests. The cemetery isn’t just a testament to one family, though. It echoes with the footsteps of Texas Revolution veterans like George W. Pentecost himself and Andrew J. Beard, another son-in-law. It holds the stories of Confederate veterans, their sacrifices etched in stone. Over time, the Beard family intertwined with the A. J. Brown family, giving the cemetery its current name, a testament to the enduring power of family legacy.
