Across the gently flowing Irwell River stands Broughton Bridge. It’s not the original Broughton Suspension Bridge, a marvel of its time. That bridge met a dramatic end. Let me transport you back to April 12, 1831. Soldiers of the 60th Rifle Corps marched across Broughton Suspension Bridge, their rhythmic steps echoing through the air. As they marched, the bridge began to sway. It was an amusing sensation at first, but the amusement quickly turned to terror. The bridge, succumbing to the vibrations, collapsed. Around forty soldiers plunged into the shallow waters below. Miraculously, none perished, but many suffered injuries. Broughton Suspension Bridge, built in 1826 by John Fitzgerald, was a symbol of progress. It connected his estates and colliery, spanning 144 feet across the Irwell. Its collapse highlighted a critical engineering flaw. The investigation revealed a single, poorly forged bolt in the stay-chains had snapped under the stress of the marching soldiers. The incident led to a crucial change in military protocol: the order for soldiers to break step when crossing bridges. Broughton Suspension Bridge was rebuilt, stronger than before, but the memory of its dramatic collapse remained. Eventually, it was replaced in 1924 by the sturdy footbridge you see before you today. The legacy of Broughton Suspension Bridge serves as a cautionary tale. It speaks to the power of resonance, the importance of robust engineering, and the impact a seemingly simple action, like marching in step, can have.
