Founded in 1869 Brother Martin High School boasts a rich history. Initially known as St Aloysius College it later merged with Cor Jesu High School. This merger created the Brother Martin High School we know today. The school stands proudly in the Gentilly neighborhood of New Orleans. Its crimson and gold colors are a familiar sight throughout the city.
Brother Martin is more than just a school. It’s a place where traditions run deep. The school’s mascot the Crusader embodies this spirit. Brother Martin’s athletic achievements are legendary. The school boasts numerous state championships across various sports. The wrestling program is particularly noteworthy with an impressive 21 state championship titles since 1979. Basketball also holds a prominent place in Brother Martin’s history. One team even achieved mythical national champion status in 1969-70.
But Brother Martin wasn’t untouched by adversity. Hurricane Katrina in 2005 forced the school to temporarily relocate to Baton Rouge. Students and faculty relocated to Catholic High School. They used its facilities after hours. This temporary arrangement lasted for the rest of 2005. Amazingly Brother Martin reopened in New Orleans in January 2006. The school sustained minimal flood damage. Faculty and volunteers worked tirelessly to restore the building.
The school’s campus is a testament to its growth. Cor Jesu Hall the oldest building stands as a reminder of its past. The Conlin Gymnasium the largest high school gym in the city is a modern marvel. The Ridgley Center a 40000-square-foot facility houses fine arts and athletic spaces. It represents a significant milestone in the school’s expansion. The Meyer Science and Mathematics Building is another impressive addition providing state-of-the-art labs and classrooms. The James B Branton Chapel completes the modern campus.
