Five million people visit Brooklyn Bridge Park annually. That’s a lot of footsteps on the reclaimed land. Brooklyn Bridge Park wasn’t always a haven for leisure. This 85-acre space along the East River once hummed with the industry of a bustling port.

Brooklyn Bridge Park’s history stretches back to the 1640s. The area known as “het Veer” or “the Ferry” was a crucial transportation hub. Small boats and ferries supported a thriving trade economy. Robert Fulton’s steam-powered ferry company revolutionized travel in 1814. Railroad lines arrived in the 1850s alongside massive brick warehouses like the Empire Stores. These structures became symbols of Brooklyn’s growing commerce.

The opening of the Brooklyn Bridge in 1883 and the Manhattan Bridge in 1909 marked a turning point. The ferry trade declined. The waterfront fell into neglect. The construction of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway in the 1950s further isolated the area. By the 1970s much of the waterfront was abandoned. Plans to sell the piers for commercial development in 1984 sparked a community movement. Local residents and the Brooklyn Bridge Park Coalition fought to reclaim the area for public use. Their decades-long campaign secured city and state support for the park.

The first phase of Brooklyn Bridge Park opened in 2010. The park’s design by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates incorporated hills created from soil from other city construction projects. This innovative approach not only shaped the landscape but also helped reduce noise from the nearby expressway. The park’s design seamlessly blends natural habitats with recreational areas and historical structures.

The Empire Stores and Tobacco Warehouse are examples of the park’s thoughtful preservation of industrial heritage. They’ve been repurposed into modern venues. The park continues to evolve. New sections opened as recently as 2021. Brooklyn Bridge Park’s story is one of transformation. It’s a testament to the power of community activism and creative urban planning. It’s a place where history and nature meet. It’s a place where millions find respite and recreation. It is Brooklyn Bridge Park.
