Beneath the bustling city of New York, a marvel of engineering unfolds: the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel. Ever wondered how this underwater passage came to be? The Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, initially the “Brooklyn–Manhattan Tunnel,” was conceived in the 1920s as a solution to Lower Manhattan’s increasing traffic woes. Formal plans emerged in 1930, envisioning a six-lane tunnel under the East River, linking Red Hook, Brooklyn, with the Battery in Manhattan. But the path to completion was far from smooth. Funding proved elusive, prompting Robert Moses, New York City Parks Commissioner, to propose a bridge instead. Public outcry and repeated rejections by the US Army Corps of Engineers, concerned about obstructing access to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, forced a return to the tunnel idea. Construction on the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel finally began in 1940, only to be hampered by World War II material shortages. The Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, stretching 9,117 feet, became the longest continuous underwater vehicular tunnel in North America. Its twin tubes, each carrying two lanes, finally opened in 1950. Imagine the relief of those first drivers, bypassing the slow and often unreliable ferries. Truckers at Bush Terminal rejoiced, anticipating significant time and cost savings. The tunnel quickly surpassed initial traffic projections, a testament to its vital role in connecting Brooklyn and Manhattan. Over the years, the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel has faced numerous challenges, including leaks, flooding from Hurricane Sandy, and even a wrong-way driver incident in 2023. Yet, it remains a crucial artery, officially renamed the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel in 2012.
