Did you know that the stones in Brookdale Reformed Church whisper tales of resilience? This isn’t just any church. It’s a living testament to faith and community. For almost two centuries Brookdale Reformed Church has stood proudly on Bellevue Avenue in Bloomfield New Jersey. Founded officially in 1801 its roots stretch back even further to 1795. Imagine the bustling energy of Stone House Plains as the population grew. Services began in Captain John A Garrabrant’s barn. Reverend Peter Stryker led these early congregations.

The need for a proper building became clear. Abram Garrabrant generously offered land. Congregation members themselves hauled stone. They performed the meticulous mason work. The first church was built by the hands of the people it served. It was a true labor of love. But fate struck twice. In 1857 and again in 1910 fire destroyed the building. Yet from ashes hope was reborn. Local families contributed stones from the ruins of early Dutch homes. These stones became part of the rebuilt church. Look closely and you’ll see initials and dates etched into the very fabric of this place. Each stone tells a story. It speaks of loss and of perseverance.

Today Brookdale Reformed Church remains a vibrant center of faith. Reverend Scarlet Gorton the current pastor leads the congregation. She brings a legacy of service. She continues the long tradition of providing spiritual guidance. The church supports Compassion children worldwide. It participates in mission trips throughout the country and abroad. The congregation studies the Bible together. They embrace diversity. They value family. Brookdale Reformed Church offers a wide range of programs. It provides a nurturing environment for all ages. The Looking Glass Children’s Center is one example. This childcare facility cares for children aged 6 weeks to 13 years.

More than just a house of worship Brookdale Reformed Church stands as a symbol of community. It’s a place of solace and strength. A place of spiritual growth and fellowship. Its history is etched not just in stone but in the lives of countless individuals. So as you stand here looking at Brookdale Reformed Church remember its enduring spirit. Remember the faith that built it rebuilt it and keeps it vibrant today. This is a place where history and hope intertwine. It is a place where faith continues to flourish.
