Brookdale Park. A place of serene beauty and vibrant activity. It was designed by the Olmsted Firm. They also designed Central Park and the National Mall. This park was once a gathering place for the Lenni Lenape Indians. Later Dutch settlers farmed the land. By the 1800s it became known as Brookdale.
Land purchases for Brookdale Park began in 1928. The Great Depression slowed construction. The Works Progress Administration stepped in. They provided funding and labor. This ensured Brookdale Park’s completion by 1937. The planned Field House Casino Dancing Pavilion and Band Stand were never built due to budget constraints.
Brookdale County Park is more than just pretty trees and green grass. It offers numerous amenities. You will also find the Essex County Rose Garden with over 100 rose species.
