In 1930, Archer Huntington, a man of immense wealth and scholarly pursuits, and his wife, the renowned sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington, sought refuge in South Carolina. Anna, battling tuberculosis, needed a place to recover, and they envisioned a tranquil escape. However, their vision soon evolved. Just 18 months later, Brookgreen Gardens was born, incorporating not only their private sanctuary but also a grand vision for preserving American figurative sculpture, the plants of the Southeast, and the region’s unique fauna. Brookgreen Gardens, including Brook Green Meadow, rests on land once comprising four rice plantations. These plantations, including Brookgreen Plantation, thrived on the labor of enslaved Africans, whose expertise in rice cultivation shaped the economy of the region. One of the plantation owners, Joshua John Ward, held over 1,000 enslaved people, a stark reminder of the complex history embedded within this landscape. The lives of the enslaved people who toiled in these fields are an integral part of Brook Green Meadow’s story. Though their names may be lost to time, their labor and resilience shaped the very land we stand on today. The Huntingtons’ legacy extends beyond the gardens themselves. They brought electricity to the area, established a medical clinic, built a school and a church, enriching the lives of the community.
