The Dong-a Ilbo newspaper published a photo of Sohn at the medal ceremony. It altered the image. It removed the Japanese flag from his tunic. This act angered the Japanese Governor-General of Korea.

For winning the marathon, Sohn was to receive an ancient Corinthian helmet. It dated back to the 8th century BC. The IOC believed it violated amateur rules. It was finally presented to Sohn in 1986. Sohn donated the helmet to the National Museum of Korea.

After his athletic career, Sohn coached other runners. He saw Hwang Young-Cho win gold at the 1992 Summer Olympics.
