Cruising along Bronx River Road is like stepping back in time. This major street in Yonkers, New York, whispers stories of a bygone era. Bronx River Road runs alongside the Bronx River, mirroring its twists and turns. The Metro-North railroad tracks hum a steady rhythm alongside the road, adding to the symphony of urban life. Across the Bronx River, you can glimpse Mount Vernon and the Bronx. Bronx River Road stretches down to McLean Avenue, where it transforms into Webster Avenue in the Woodlawn section of the Bronx. If you head north, Bronx River Road merges with Midland Avenue near the Cross County Parkway, leading you towards the charming Village of Bronxville. Bronx River Road is a fascinating mix of old and new. Grand apartment buildings stand as sentinels of the past, while smaller corner stores add a touch of local flavor. This middle-class neighborhood is sometimes called Sherwood Park or Fleetwood. But locals simply refer to it as “Bronx River Road.” A defining moment in Bronx River Road’s history occurred on March 16, 2003. The Wakefield Towers apartment building at 85 Bronx River Road was engulfed in flames. Over 300 residents were displaced, but thankfully, no serious injuries were reported.
