What fuels a community? The Bronx Museum of the Arts believes it’s art. Right here on the Grand Concourse, this museum pulsates with the lifeblood of the Bronx. The Bronx Museum of the Arts first opened its doors in 1971. It was a collaborative effort, born from the vision of the Bronx Council on the Arts and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The museum aimed to ignite a passion for the arts within the diverse tapestry of the Bronx. Initially, the Bronx Museum of the Arts resided in the rotunda of the Bronx County Courthouse. Its first exhibition showcased 28 paintings borrowed from the Met’s collection. Over time, the museum expanded its reach. It established galleries in other Bronx neighborhoods like Co-op City, Bedford Park, and even within Beth Abraham Hospital in Allerton. In its early years, the Bronx Museum of the Arts hosted a staggering 350 exhibitions, demonstrating its commitment to artistic exploration. The museum found its permanent home in 1983, in a repurposed synagogue on 165th Street and Grand Concourse. The building itself has gone through fascinating transformations. Originally designed by Simon B. Zelnick, the structure underwent renovations in the 1980s. It incorporated concrete, steel, glass, and signature “ribbon windows.” An expansion in 2006, designed by Arquitectonica, added a striking North Wing. This wing boasts a pleated aluminum facade, a two-story lobby, and expanded gallery space. Today, the Bronx Museum of the Arts stands as a testament to the power of art to uplift and inspire. It remains committed to accessibility. In 2012, it made admission free for all, further solidifying its role as a cultural hub for the community and beyond. The Bronx Museum of the Arts is more than just a building; it’s a living testament to the vibrant spirit of the Bronx.
