A million dollars. That’s how much it cost to build this magnificent structure. This is Broadway Methodist Church in Los Angeles a testament to faith and ambition. Right here on the very spot where it once stood you can almost feel the echoes of its grandeur.

In the early 1900s the Methodist Episcopal Church was a powerful force in Los Angeles. Its growth mirrored the city’s explosive expansion. From humble beginnings it rose to become a prominent institution. Methodists played a key role in founding the University of Southern California. They were also active in the temperance movement advocating for Prohibition.

The church’s story is one of perseverance. In 1850 the first Methodist services were held in Mayor John G. Nichols’ adobe house. Early Methodist missionaries faced persecution from the Catholic community and opposition from pro-slavery Southerners. Despite these challenges the church thrived. It moved several times. Each relocation reflected the congregation’s growing size and influence.

In 1923 the congregation dedicated its third permanent building. It was a stunning Spanish Renaissance style structure designed by John C Austin. The building boasted a steel frame. Ornamental terra cotta adorned its exterior. Inside a massive auditorium seated over 3000 people. The interior design and stained-glass windows were created by the famous Tiffany Studios of New York. The dedication was a lavish affair. It included organ recitals and radio broadcasts.

The church also included a four-story Sunday School building. This housed social halls dining rooms and various offices. Three exquisite mosaic panels by Tiffany Studios showcased biblical and Methodist figures. The church was a symbol of Methodist pride. It was described as Methodism’s largest and most costly church ever built.

The building stood for nearly sixty years. However as downtown Los Angeles emptied the congregation dwindled. In the end the property was sold to the Southern California Gas Company. The church was demolished. Today a high-rise apartment complex stands on the site. However the spirit of Broadway Methodist Church endures. It remains a church without walls a beacon of hope and community service. The story of this church serves as a reminder of the power of faith even in the face of adversity.
