What if I told you that a small church on Detroit’s west side is doing big things? That’s Broadstreet Presbyterian Church. It stands as a beacon of hope. Everyone is welcome here. The church believes in loving and respecting all.

Broadstreet Presbyterian Church has a rich history. It reaches out to serve the community’s needs. These needs include spiritual, educational, cultural, and social support. The original congregation dissolved in 1959. But the Presbytery maintained services until 1961.

A survey found that a Presbyterian church was still needed. Lawrence T. Glenn Sr. was sent to organize a new congregation. This new church would celebrate African American heritage. It would do so through music and worship.

Key moments mark Broadstreet Presbyterian Church’s journey. On October 14, 1962, the Service of Organization took place. James A. Mitcham Jr. presided. The church held its first adult baptism. Eighty-one people entered into a covenant fellowship. In 1965, Rev. Lawrence T. Glenn became pastor.

Today, Broadstreet Presbyterian Church continues to serve its community. The church offers many resources. These include a community garden and a lending library. There is also a clothes closet. An emergency food pantry and toiletry pantry are available.

The Boardwalk on Broadstreet is a community gathering spot. It features a solar charging station. People can charge up to twelve devices at once. Broadstreet Presbyterian Church also has a Butterfly Garden. It was expanded in 2020.

During spring and summer, the community garden thrives. Educational classes teach gardening techniques. The church grows organic vegetables. These are available to the community. Broadstreet Presbyterian Church plans to host a Farmers Market.

In the fall, tutoring is provided for grades K-9. The tutoring program focuses on reading and math. The church aims to help children read by third grade. This helps them succeed in later grades. Public Act 306 of 2016 highlights this need.

Rev. Opelton Parker Sr. leads Broadstreet Presbyterian Church today. The church is family-oriented. It is community-involved and biblically based. Its mission is to love God and neighbors.
