Flooded homes and resilient spirits. That’s the story of Broadmoor. We’re standing in a neighborhood that has faced immense challenges, but its heart beats strong. Broadmoor, nestled in Uptown New Orleans, is more than just houses. It’s a testament to the human spirit. Officially, Broadmoor is bordered by Eve Street, Washington Avenue, Toledano Street, South Claiborne Avenue, Jefferson Avenue, South Rocheblave Street, Nashville Avenue, and Octavia Street. But its true boundaries are defined by the resilience of its people. Broadmoor’s story begins in the early 20th century. Before development, it was a marshy fishing spot. Improved drainage paved the way for homes, initially raised high for fear of floods. The neighborhood flourished in the 1920s. Over a third of its houses and Wilson School were built during this time. Growth continued until the mid-20th century. Then, suburban migration led to population decline. Broadmoor faced its greatest challenge in 2005. Hurricane Katrina devastated the area. Floodwaters reached 14 feet in some places. A proposal to convert Broadmoor into parkland was met with fierce resistance from returning residents. They were already rebuilding their lives, one flooded ground floor at a time. Broadmoor is a microcosm of New Orleans. Its demographics reflect the city’s diversity. It’s home to families, young professionals, and graduate students. Within its borders, you’ll find the Rosa F. Keller Library and Community Center, a symbol of the neighborhood’s rebirth after Katrina. The historic Gem Theater, now a microbrewery, stands as another sign of revitalization. Broadmoor is a neighborhood that remembers its past while embracing its future. It’s a place where resilience isn’t just a word. It’s a way of life.
