Can you believe that this sandy haven in the heart of Brisbane was once part of the Brisbane River? The Brisbane Lagoon, as it’s affectionately known, is a marvel of engineering. It’s a place where the city meets the beach, a man-made oasis that offers a taste of tropical paradise without leaving the bustling city.

Standing here, you can almost imagine the Brisbane River as it once flowed, the water lapping against the riverbank. But in the early 1990s, visionaries dreamed of transforming this land into something extraordinary. They built a concrete lagoon, scooped up 4,000 cubic meters of sand from Moreton Bay, and planted lush subtropical vegetation. The result? A beach wonderland stretching 300 meters in length, complete with crystal clear, chlorinated water for safe swimming.

What’s even more remarkable is that this lagoon is meticulously maintained. Every year, 70 tonnes of fresh sand are added to keep the beach picture-perfect. And if you wander near the lagoon, you may notice a dedicated team working tirelessly to keep it sparkling. It’s no surprise that it won the title of the cleanest beach in the Moreton Bay region in 1999.

But the Brisbane Lagoon is more than just a pretty face. It’s a vibrant hub of activity, a place where families can splash in the shallows, sunbathers can soak up the rays, and children can squeal with delight in the interactive water-play park called Aquativity. It’s a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of the people of Brisbane, a testament to their desire to bring a touch of the coast to the very heart of the city.
