Across the Ave River stands the Bridge Dom Zameiro a testament to time and travel. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s a living link to history. For centuries the Bridge Dom Zameiro connected the parishes of Bagunte and Macieira da Maia. It served as a vital artery. It carried the weight of carts and the hurried steps of pilgrims.
The Bridge Dom Zameiro boasts a fascinating past. Some believe its foundations are Roman. The current structure however dates back to the 12th or 13th century. In 1185 the Bishop of Porto D Fernando Martins included it in his will. He left a generous donation ensuring its continued existence. The Bridge Dom Zameiro is mentioned again in official records from 1220 and 1258. Kings Afonso II and Afonso III themselves acknowledged its significance.
More than just a means of crossing the river the Bridge Dom Zameiro was part of ancient routes. It formed a section of the Via Veteris a Roman road. It also lay on the Karraria Antiqua a medieval path. Both routes from Porto led towards Barcelos and Esposende. The Bridge Dom Zameiro became an important part of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. Pilgrims from the south of Portugal would pass over its sturdy arches on their way north.
Notice the uneven deck of the Bridge Dom Zameiro. It’s slightly sloped. Eight arches of perfect semi-circles support its weight. These arches are not uniform in size. Clever water management features are built into its design. Triangular cutouts on one side and square cutouts on the other. These divert the river’s flow reducing pressure on the bridge structure.
Over the years the Bridge Dom Zameiro has undergone various restorations. Some more radical than others. The 2003 renovations gave it a modern face. It is believed however that at least the first arch on the right bank remains from its original Romanesque construction. This remarkable bridge stands as a quiet observer. It has witnessed centuries of history. It continues to connect communities and inspire awe. Its beauty and history invite contemplation.
