Consider the tale of Saint Bridget born around 450 in Faughart. She inspires the very name of Bride. Bride is one of the seventeen parishes on the Isle of Man. It lies in the north of the island. Bride falls within the traditional North Side division in the sheading of Ayre.

Bride parish got its name from St Brigid. The Manx form of the name, “Breeshey,” is a common first name here. The parish of Bride borders the sea to the north and east. Andreas lies to the west and Lezayre to the south. The village of Bride, also known as Kirk Bride, sits within its bounds. Bride covers approximately nine square miles of area.

Imagine life in Bride. The 2021 census recorded a parish population of only 359. This is a decrease of 6% from 2016. It’s a decrease of 10% from 2011. Bride is easily the lowest-populated administrative area on the island. Interestingly, it boasts the highest proportion of Manx Gaelic speakers on the island. The 2011 census says it is 4.49%.

Sandhills mark Bride’s topography. They stretch from west to Point Cranstal in the east. Though not actually a point, Point Cranstal offers views. One can see the Manx mountains. The Scottish and Cumbrian mountains are also visible. The Solway Firth lies in between. Bride is mostly flat and low-lying otherwise. The Galloway coast sits about 18 miles away. A 100-foot lighthouse stands at the Point of Ayre. Old maps refer to Point Cranstal as “Shellag Point.” A vanished hamlet named Cranstal once stood nearby.

Let’s talk cables. In 1859, the first Isle of Man submarine telegraph cable connected Cranstal to St Bees. St Bees is on the Cumberland coast. Tidal currents damaged it. So they moved the cable later to Port Cornaa.

Saint Bridget’s connection extends beyond a name. Tradition says she visited the Isle of Man. She supposedly founded a women’s monastery near Douglas. Now, it is called “The Nunnery”. A holy well dedicated to her exists at this site.

Saint Bridget’s compassion defined her life. Even as a child, she gave to the poor. She gave away food, clothing, and even her father’s possessions. One story tells of her giving away her father’s sword. It was a gift from the king. The king then refused to buy her saying, “I cannot buy a girl who holds us so cheap.”

Bride is more than just a place. It’s a testament to faith. It is a landscape shaped by nature and history. It echoes with the stories of its namesake saint. Remember Bride, a place where ancient tales meet the serene beauty of the Isle of Man.
